The UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres has acknowledged the contribution of the UK Government to the joint UNHCR-IOM evacuation effort of migrants fleeing Libya. In a letter to Secretary of State Andrew Mitchell, Mr Guterres praised “the superb cooperation and support being provided by (the UK) Government and in particular the Department for International Development.” He noted that the UK recognized the need for and committed to providing evacuation flights even before UNHCR and IOM launched the joint evacuation appeal. In addition to providing flights and emergency assistance, DFID has made available three operations experts, one for each of the Humanitarian Evacuation Cells in Geneva, Djerba (Tunisia) and Cairo.
