Wansbroughs Raises Funds for Refugees
Beachcroft Wansbroughs, the national commercial
law firm, recently hosted a charity event at Somerset House to raise
awareness of and funds for the thousands of people forced to flee
their homes in the Darfur region of the Sudan.
The event, attended by over 100 of the firm’s private finance
initiative and public/private partnership clients, raised nearly
£6,500 for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
(UNHCR).
The evening reception included a presentation from
the UNHCR — the UN refugee agency, a raffle and a thought-provoking
photo exhibition. The money raised will go towards the relief work
currently being carried out in Darfur and neighbouring Chad, helping
the 1.8 million people who have had to flee their homes and contributing
to numerous projects, including purchasing food aid and items such
as plastic tarpaulins, blankets and sleeping mats.
With estimates that an additional 100,000 refugees
may flee the strife-torn region in the coming months, the UNHCR
and its partners are also drilling wells to ensure that both refugees
and host communities have access to adequate fresh water supplies.
Other programmes to be given assistance include efforts to register
refugees so that they can be traced should missing family members
attempt to contact them.
