UNHCR calls on UK and France to exercise greatest caution before sending Afghans home

The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) calls upon the British and French authorities to exercise the greatest caution before forcibly returning Afghan nationals in an irregular situation to Afghanistan, because of insecurity and human rights abuses in that country, as well as the harsh climate conditions during winter.

Iraqis, Afghans and Somalis top list of asylum seekers in industrialised world

Iraq remains the top country of origin of the asylum applicants (13,200 claims) for the fourth consecutive year, according to the UN refugee agency’s provisional statistics released Wednesday.

UNHCR draws road map to help people out of Calais "jungle"

Locals call it, "The Jungle" - a squalid warren of shanties made out of cardboard, plywood and bits of plastic that has mushroomed among the sand dunes and brambles outside Calais. Hundreds of migrants and asylum seekers, including children, live there or in derelict buildings closer to the centre of this port city in northern France.

The innovative Fast4Swat fundraising campaign aimed at raising awareness and much needed funds for the more than 2 million people who have been displaced in recent months by fighting in northern Pakistan has received backing from leading members of the Pakistan Cricket Team.

UNHCR annual report shows 42 million people uprooted worldwide

The number of people forcibly uprooted by conflict and persecution worldwide stood at 42 million at the end of last year amid a sharp slowdown in repatriation and more prolonged conflicts resulting in protracted displacement.

Aid agencies call for strong agreement to address 'humanitarian shocks' of climate change

A group of key UN and non-UN aid agencies attending climate change talks in Bonn this week are calling for the humanitarian impacts of climate change to be addressed in the successor agreement to the Kyoto Protocol in Copenhagen in December.

UN Refugee Agency examines child asylum decisions

A new report published today by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) presents for the first time the findings of an audit of decision-making in child asylum claims. UNHCR’s sixth audit report examines the quality of asylum decisions made by the UK Border Agency (UKBA) in cases where children apply in their own right, and the impact of the asylum process on children.

Conflicts in Afghanistan and Somalia fuel increase in asylum seekers

The number of asylum seekers in industrialised countries increased last year for the second year running, according to provisional statistics compiled by the UN refugee agency.
