UNHCR Response to David Blunkett's proposals for asylum reform
In response to new proposals for asylum reform in the UK, UNHCR raised its concerns over plans for a 'safe country' list as no country can be declared 100% safe. However UNHCR suggests that a practical system to identify exceptional cases could be developed. Concern was raised also over the proposal to restrict Exceptional Leave to Remain, as this is a crucial safeguard for many people fleeing civil war and generalised violence.

Focus On Countries Of Origin, Says UN Refugee Chief
The solution to many of Europe's migration and asylum problems lies in the countries and regions of origin - Ruud Lubbers said on a visit to the UK. Holding meetings with Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw, Home Secretary, David Blunkett and Development Secretary, Clare Short, it was discussed how UNHCR may be able to assist in responding to the asylum issues facing the UK and other European countries.

UNHCR Response To Asylum And Immigration White Paper
Anne Dawson-Shepherd, the UK Representative for the UNHCR, voiced concern over the White Paper which indicates that the detention of some asylum seekers will continue. The UNHCR urges the UK to follow the example of the majority of EU countries where resort to detention is more in line with international standards.

UN refugee agency calls on the UK to stop removing Zimbabwean asylum seekers
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees urged the British government to suspend temporarily the removal of unsuccessful asylum seekers to Zimbabwe. In the spirit of the 1951 UN Refugee Convention it asks the government to grant asylum to those who risk persecution in Zimbabwe.
