More than 100,000 Syrian refugees in August

Last month, the number of refugees fleeing Syria rose sharply, with 103,416 people seeking asylum in neighbouring countries. As the highest monthly total to date, it brings the total number of Syrian refugees registered or awaiting registration to more than 235,300.

The Syrian Arab Republic has long been host to thousands of Iraqi refugees, many of whom have now been forced to return to Iraq.

UNHCR's Sudanese staff go the extra mile to help refugees

At Jamam refugee camp in South Sudan, the majority of UNHCR staff were once refugees themselves. Their personal experiences are their strongest source of motivation.

"I have the capacity to help and I know where they have been. I have no other choice in my heart but to help."

There are roughly 105,000 refugees in South Sudan's Maban County.

UNHCR and its partners are working vigorously to prevent and contain the outbreak of malaria and several water-borne diseases.

Toma and Hasani fled from their home in Mugum Village, in Bau County, Sudan. They are now living in Yusuf Batil refugee camp.
