Reporting Asylum: The Local

Press Awards

The Award ceremony celebrates good practice in media coverage of refugees and asylum seekers in the capital. They will be presented by Mayor Ken Livingstone and Shami Chakrabarti from the human rights organisation, Liberty. Londoners are welcome to submit nominations until 31 October.

The Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars

An inspiring, cheering documentary following a group of musicians who form a band while in a refugee camp in Guinea and then make their way back to Sierra Leone and - hopefully - a recording career.

This documentary is part of The BFM International Film Festival which runs from 7th September to 13th September 2007

World Scout Jamboree 2007

July 27th- 8th August

Hylands Park, Chelmsford, Essex

The 21st World Scout Jamboree will be hosted by the Scout Association of the United Kingdom from July 27 until August 8, 2007. It will bring together 40,000 Scouts, Venturers, leaders, and staff for 12 days.

In 2007, the centennial year of the founding of the Scouting movement, the jamboree theme will be "One World, One Promise."

UNHCR will be working in partnership with Student Action for Refugees (STAR) on the Global Development Boulevard, which aims to allow young people to discover the principal development issues facing the world today and build a better understanding of how they can contribute to solving them.

The event will be attended by over 40,000 people from nearly every country in the world. Find out more here.

Exposed and Hungry: Life in Eastern Congo

UNHCR and UN World Food Programme present an exhbition of photographs from the Democratic Republic of Congo which photographer Susan Schulman took on a recent assignment for both agencies.

'Refugee Youth: Using Sport to Bridge the Divide'

Lewis Media Centre, London

The United Nations Association Young Professionals Network (YPN) is partnering again with UNHCR to host this year's UK headline World Refugee Day Event.

The theme of the event will be 'Help them learn.Help them play', reflecting UNHCR's global campaign to use education and sport to help refugee children rebuild their lives.

The keynote speaker will be Ms Bemma Donkoh, the head of the UN Refugee Agency in the UK.

She will be joined by representatives Right To Play and Nike.

Celebrating Sanctuary

Celebrating Sanctuary is a one day free festival on 17 June which celebrates London's refugee communities and the enormous contribution they make to the cultural life of the capital.

 

"Exposed and hungry: Life in Eastern Congo"

Photo exhibition

This spring, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and UN World Food Programme (WFP) are presenting an exhibition of striking photographs from the Democratic Republic of Congo, taken by photographer Susan Schulman.

Centred around the themes of shelter and sustenance, the exhibition will recount some of the experiences of the displaced Congolese in camps and in transit, and the emotions they feel when returning home and starting life anew. More details.
